Why does SUWA maintain a permanent presence in Was Why does SUWA maintain a permanent presence in Washington, DC? Because the redrock wilderness is federal public land—and the most consequential decisions about its future are made there. Being on the ground in DC allows our staff to lobby members of Congress, meet directly with administration officials, attend hearings, track legislative maneuvering, and push back in real time when bad ideas threaten how these landscapes are managed.

Unfortunately, this year has been especially brutal for public lands with congressional attacks ranging from the unprecedented sell-off proposals, efforts to rollback land management plans, bills expanding motorized vehicle use in protected areas, and harmful provisions buried in the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”.

In the meantime, the Trump administration has moved to hollow out the Bureau of Land Management and other land management agencies through budget cuts, hiring freezes, and catastrophic staffing shortages—while Congress has largely stood by.

If you’re able, please support SUWA’s work in DC with a year-end gift today! Link in bio.

Tired of Mike Lee trying to sell off public land? Tired of Mike Lee trying to sell off public land?

This Wednesday, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a markup on multiple bills, including S.1860, the Brian Head Town Land Conveyance Act. This legislation, introduced by Utah Senator Mike Lee, would transfer, at no cost, 24 acres of public land within the Dixie National Forest to the town of Brian Head in Utah.

If you live in one of the following states: UT, WY, ID, MT, AR, PA, WV, LA, MS, ND, NM, OR, WA, HI, ME, NV, CO, CA, AZ, AK, your senator sits on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and will have an opportunity to vote to advance or stop this legislation during the committee markup on Wednesday.

Please take a moment to tell your Senator to vote NO on Brian Head bill! Link in bio.

As the bill is written, it authorizes the town to use the land for a public works facility or “any other purposes as determined by local officials,” meaning there is nothing to prevent the town from transferring or selling the land into private hands.

This legislation grants federal land for free, with no requirement for public review or environmental assessment—setting a concerning precedent for public land nationwide.

The Brian Head bill is a backdoor sell-off bill. ACT NOW!

Over the last year, elected officials in Utah and Over the last year, elected officials in Utah and U.S. Congress have attempted to advance proposals that would fundamentally dismantle our very system of federal public lands.

Politicians like Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Celeste Maloy have openly argued for selling off public lands to private interests, while Governor Spencer Cox and others attempted the sale of 18.5 million acres of federal land—and we don't expect them to let up anytime soon. A closed-door meeting earlier this month about the national parks in Utah—designed specifically to avoid open meetings laws—has SUWA closely monitoring the state’s activities.

If you are able, please make a year-end gift to help us stand firm against renewed attempts to sell off public lands in Utah. (link in bio).

Your donation strengthens our field team’s on-the-ground monitoring—data that we use to hold the BLM accountable. It powers our legal team as they dig into the nitty-gritty of environmental law. It energizes our grassroots organizers, whose rapid-response efforts helped stop an attempted land sell-off in the U.S. Senate this year. And it supports our staff in Washington DC, who work with lawmakers and national partners to block harmful proposals before they gain traction.

For more than four decades, SUWA has effectively defended the wildness of Utah’s redrock country. Today, we’re also fighting for something more fundamental: the continued existence of public lands themselves. #protectwildutah
