As we head into the long weekend in observance of As we head into the long weekend in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day, let's take a moment to recognize that recent polling shows overwhelming support among Utah voters for Native American Tribes to play a strong role in managing public lands that hold sacred and cultural significance.

Today the Nine Mile Canyon Coalition, Southern Uta Today the Nine Mile Canyon Coalition, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, and Center for Biological Diversity sued the Trump administration’s Bureau of Land Management for approving construction of a highway through Utah’s scenic, culturally and historically significant Gate Canyon in eastern Utah.

The project would straighten 6 miles of what is currently a scenic, winding, gravel road and involves the blasting and destruction of 100-foot tall canyon walls, damaging Native rock imagery, Utah history, and habitat for threatened wildlife.

Gate Canyon feeds into Nine Mile Canyon — a world-renowned archaeological area that contains more than 10,000 unique, irreplaceable cultural, historical and archaeological resources. The proposed route of the highway, designed to accommodate 70-foot oil tankers, cuts directly through the rugged landscape and will fundamentally alter the character of Gate Canyon (see last slide for rendering).

As of Monday, Sept. 28 (two weeks after the mineral withdrawal was lifted during the second illegal reduction), more than triple that number – 72 claims – have been filed in Bears Ears.

Claims have been filed by Land Survey Advisors LLC (36), Kimmerle Mining (33), and George W. Schultz (3). A map of all claims can be found above.

Since our press release last Wednesday, Kimmerle Since our press release last Wednesday, Kimmerle Mining has filed 7 additional mining claims. All are located near Natural Bridges National Monument—the first International Dark Sky Park.

This brings the total mining claims to 20 from Kimmerle Mining and 23 total (3 from George W. Schultz) in lands cut from Bears Ears National Monument.

Now is a critical time to contact your members of Congress and urge them to speak out against the cuts to these extraordinary places, as well as the inexcusable disbanding of the Bears Ears Commission.
