Today is World Bee Day! Did you know the state of

Today is World Bee Day! Did you know the state of Utah is home to a quarter of the bee species found in the United States, making it the most bee-diverse state in the nation (it's the "Beehive State" after all)? Roughly half of those species have been documented in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, likely due to the area's incredible diversity of flowering plants. Another bee hotspot is Utah's San Rafael Desert, where researchers from Utah State University have identified more bee genera than exist in all of New England, as well as 48 species previously unknown to science.

According to the UN, nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops. Unfortunately, many native bee populations are struggling due to habitat loss/fragmentation, pesticide use, climate change, drought, and introduced diseases. Conserving large wild landscapes can help by protecting the habitat and favorite food sources of native bee species, which in turn promote biodiversity and healthy habitats by pollinating native plants.

The Hopi Tribal Council recently passed a resoluti

The Hopi Tribal Council recently passed a resolution formally endorsing America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act, the bill to protect more than 8 million acres of federal public land in Utah as wilderness.

Passage of the resolution was proposed and supported by the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office (HCPO) and the Hopi Cultural Resource Advisory Task Team. In a historic first, the resolution was written in the Hopi language, the first time the Tribal Council has passed a resolution in Hopi since the contemporary Hopi government was established in 1936. Typically, resolutions and other official documents from the Hopi Tribal Council are written in English.

“Hopi peoples have lived in the canyons and mountains and on the mesas included in America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act since time immemorial, and these areas comprise one of the most significant cultural landscapes in the United States,” said HCPO Director Stewart Koyiyumptewa. “The passage of this resolution in Hopi is an assertion of our tribal Sovereignty, and a reminder that our relationship with the landscapes that would be protected by America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act precedes both the United States and the state of Utah.”

America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act was reintroduced in the U.S. Congress last week by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-NM). SUWA is grateful for the Hopi Tribal Council's support of this important legislation.

It’s official! America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act has been reintroduced in the Senate today. Many thanks to @durbincampaign for sponsoring this important legislation and to the 20 original cosponsors (see list below)!

America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act is the seminal legislation that would permanently protect over 8 million acres of wilderness-quality public lands in Utah. This legislation informs everything we do when it comes to protecting lands throughout the state to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy these special places.

If you see your senators on the list below, please be sure to thank them for their support. If you don’t see your senators, please text ARRWA to 52886 and ask them to cosponsor America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act and help #ProtectWildUtah!
