Last call to apply for our internship for Summer 2024!

As an intern you will work closely with our Utah Grassroots Organizer on a variety of grassroots campaigns and support the Grassroots Team as they conduct activities to demonstrate support for protecting America’s Redrock Wilderness—a critical step towards mitigating the climate crisis and protecting biodiversity.

This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in the day-to-day functions of a nonprofit organization leading one of the most recognized conservation campaigns in the country. Interns will gain insights into environmental campaign planning, education, organizing, and activism. This internship is based in Salt Lake City and runs roughly Mid-May to Mid-August 2024.

Today, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands held a Field Hearing in Hurricane, UT. A variety of topics were covered, including the proposed Northern Corridor Highway through the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (NCA) and the recently finalized Public Lands Rule. Below is a statement from Travis Hammill, SUWA’s DC Director.

“Today’s partisan hearing was out of touch with local and national support for protecting public lands— especially the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area. Despite a hearing title that included the phrase “Empowering Local Voices,” no members of the public were allowed to speak. Local community members sporting “No Highway thru Red Cliffs” stickers made up a majority of the audience and the message was clear,” — Travis Hammill

Happy Earth Day from SUWA! Here is a list of ten things you can do to celebrate:
1. Plant something! 🌳
2. Dig your toes in the dirt
3. Support earth’s pollinators 🐝(some Utah bee-friendly flowers and plants include: blue mist spirea, fernbush, hyssop, sunflower, lavender & Russian sage)
4. Clean up plastic in your neighborhood
5. Take a walk & stop to smell the flowers 🌷🌻
6. Learn about conservation work in your local community
7. Go to a park!
8. Write a poem about the Earth 🌎
9. Prepare an all veggie meal
10. Ride your bike! 🚴‍♀️

Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announc

Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced the release of the final Public Lands Rule, which establishes a “… framework to ensure healthy landscapes, abundant wildlife habitat, clean water, and balanced decision-making on our nation’s public lands.”

Yesterday we held an educational event with @sierr

Yesterday we held an educational event with @sierraclubutah and @womenofbearsears surrounding the draft Bears Ears National Monument Management Plan. The BLM is currently accepting public comments on this plan until June 11th.

We heard a brief history of the monument and its designation, an overview of the different alternatives BLM is considering, three essential components that SUWA supports, and how to write a great public comment (hint—personalize it!).

Meredith Benally from Women of Bear Ears shared her perspective on the current draft management plan and emphasized how Alternative E is both the BLM’s preferred alternative, as well as the Tribal Alternative. It was developed by the agency in consultation with the five Tribes of the Bears Ears Commission (Navajo, Pueblo of Zuni, Hopi, Ute, and Ute Mountain Ute).

Last night's event concluded with food from The Bluebird Stand—Navajo tacos, three sisters stew, and blue corn cookies. Thank you to everyone who participated, both online and in person!

Interested in learning more on how to protect Bears Ears? There is still time! Show up to the BLM-hosted public meeting in Salt Lake City this Thursday, April 18th (we'll be meeting at 5 p.m. at the Corner Bakery Cafe on Foothill Drive and walking to the 6 p.m. meeting together) to learn more and ask questions. Can’t make it? Tell your friends! SUWA will have an advocacy action coming soon too— so be on the lookout.
