Over the past four years, we’ve gotten to report

Over the past four years, we’ve gotten to report on lots of good news. From the restoration of Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments, to long overdue travel plans crossing the finish line in Labyrinth Canyon and the San Rafael Desert, to grassroots events across the country and opportunities to work hands-on with our Stewardship Program team, our efforts to protect Utah’s redrock wilderness have clearly made headway. Thank you for supporting SUWA and helping to make these things possible.

There’s no doubt that we are facing challenging times ahead. The attacks on public lands have already begun in the 119th Congress and a new, anti-conservation president and his administration will be sworn in today. While we don’t know all of the threats we're going to face, we will face them together. And we can promise this: SUWA will keep you informed, we’ll provide opportunities to use your voice and take action, and we'll remain focused on defending the redrock.

What we said the day after the election bears repeating: All of you—the passionate, fearless, and relentless activists at the heart of the Protect Wild Utah movement—will be needed more than ever before. You will be crucial in defending the wild public lands that inspire, heal, and renew us in the best and worst of times. We can still protect the places and values that matter. Together, we will.

SUWA has never backed down from a hard fight, and we’re not going to start now.

Get ready for the fight. The redrock needs us all.

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the cold and helped make this event possible. Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released the final Henry Mountains/Dirty Devil Travel Management Plan. Below is a statement from SUWA Staff Attorney, Laura Peterson.

“We are disappointed that the BLM’s new travel plan heavily favors motorized vehicles at the expense of natural and cultural resources, designating 1,670 miles of dirt trails, including opening more than 100 miles of previously closed routes, to off-road vehicles. Spanning from Capitol Reef National Park to Canyonlands National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the remote and stunning landscapes encompassed within this planning area are at the heart of Utah’s redrock country. BLM’s new plan fails to do justice to this incredible place.” —Laura Peterson

Today, Rep Celeste Maloy (R-UT) introduced legisla

Today, Rep Celeste Maloy (R-UT) introduced legislation (the Ending Presidential Overreach on Public Lands Act) in the House of Representatives that, if passed, would effectively repeal the 1906 Antiquities Act by requiring Congress to approve the establishment or extension of a National Monument.

For more than 115 years the Act has been used by Presidents of both parties to establish national monuments and protect objects of particular cultural, paleontological, and ecological significance. See quote above from SUWA DC Director, Travis Hammill.
