This week marks the 60th anniversary of the Wilder

This week marks the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act and the establishment of the National Wilderness Preservation System! Since it was signed into law, this groundbreaking federal legislation has been used by Congress to protect 112 million acres of public lands across 44 states—including Dark Canyon, Canaan Mountain, the San Rafael Reef, Labyrinth Canyon, the High Uintas, and the Cedar Mountains.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva of New Mexico (a longtime cosponsor of America's Red Rock Wilderness Act) has introduced a resolution recognizing the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act and the work of those who have advocated for and maintained the National Wilderness Preservation System. It also acknowledges the importance of Traditional Indigenous Knowledge and tribal engagement in the designation and management of these wilderness areas, and celebrates wilderness as a gift to future generations.

Passage of the Wilderness Act created the most comprehensive means of protecting America’s public lands in perpetuity—and that’s worth celebrating! Please ask your representative to cosponsor the House resolution to honor what has been accomplished through the Wilderness Act over the last 60 years and to look forward to new strides in landscape-level protection over the next six decades and beyond! Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. This monumental piece of federal legislation was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 3, 1964, establishing the National Wilderness Preservation System. Today, the Wilderness Act is used to manage and protect designated wilderness areas in the United States and remains a foundational piece of environmental law, committed to conserving wild landscapes.

When federal public land is designated as Wilderness (something that can only be done by Congress), it receives the highest form of protection possible in the US. This means activities like logging, mining, motorized vehicle use, and any form of development are generally not permitted, as the primary goal of wilderness is to preserve the natural state and allow ecosystems to function with minimal human interference. Wilderness areas do, however, allow for recreational use such as hiking, backpacking, and camping—as long as they have minimal impact.

Since its inception in 1964, the Wilderness Act has been used to establish 800 individual wilderness areas, protecting 112 million acres of public lands across 44 states. We're fortunate to have designated Wilderness in Utah—places like Dark Canyon, Muddy Creek, High Unitas, Cedar Mountain, and other Wilderness Areas— as well as millions of additional acres that are eligible for designation. Yesterday, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) ann

Yesterday, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced the release of the final Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the restored Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Below is a statement from SUWA Wildlands Attorney, Kya Marienfeld.

“We hope that in this final Plan the BLM has taken seriously its duty to protect one of the most treasured public landscapes in America. Moving forward, we expect that the Monument will once again be managed to protect what makes it like nowhere else—remarkable paleontological discoveries and cultural sites, jaw-dropping scenery, and outstanding intact and diverse natural ecosystems. SUWA will closely monitor the implementation of the final Plan, and continue to encourage management actions that will preserve the monument for current and future generations.” —Kya Marienfeld

Today, SUWA filed a lawsuit in federal district co

Today, SUWA filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Washington D.C. challenging the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) recent decision to reaffirm controversial oil and gas leases in Utah’s wild, remote San Rafael Desert region including a lease within the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness.

The San Rafael Desert is a sublime area of Utah’s backcountry encompassing the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness, which is bounded on the east by the Green River, and on the south by Canyonlands National Park and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The Labyrinth Canyon stretch of the Green River abuts the Wilderness and passes through Bowknot Bend on its way to the confluence with the Colorado River. This stretch of river is one of the most iconic in the United States and over 40 miles are designated as Scenic under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

Congress designated the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness on March 12, 2019, in the John D. Dingell Act. The lease within the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness, which the Trump administration BLM rushed to issue as a last-minute handout to its industry allies only a few days before the Dingell Act was signed into law, is literally located in the heart of this wild landscape. The decision was so controversial that U.S. Senators objected to this last-minute fossil fuel giveaway arguing that development of the lease would “destroy [what] Congress sought to protect when it created the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness.”
