The West Desert and Grand Staircase-Escalante need

The West Desert and Grand Staircase-Escalante need you! There is still time to join us in the field and become a steward of the land. Our final 2024 trip to the West Desert on October 11-14 is in need of 4-6 additional stalwart volunteers. We are working on a dispersed camping area near the Wah Wah Mountains wilderness study area, naturalizing the landscape and building lengths of fence to define camping and travel areas.

If you have not heard of or visited the West Desert, here is a bit more encouragement. Our project takes us to Crystal Peak within days of a full moon. Crystal Peak is an anomalous white mountain, remnant of an ancient volcanic eruption, devoid of iron and riddled with quartz rock. In other words: glittering. Have you ever stood beside a quartz-laced mountain in moonlight in the middle of the desert? Well, here’s your chance.

We are also returning once more to the Southern Wilds of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Sept 24-27. We require an additional 2-3 volunteers for this project. Head south for a magnificent fall excursion into the lesser-visited regions of this magnificent monument.

On July 10, 2024, the Zuni Council, consisting of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and six council members, voted unanimously to support America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act (ARRWA). The resolution endorses Congressional wilderness designation for lands within the Act, which would protect more than 8.4 million acres of federal public lands in Utah.

We are thrilled to have the Zuni Tribe’s endorsement, which is the third Tribal Nation endorsement of the Red Rock bill.

You've heard us talk a lot about Travel Management

You've heard us talk a lot about Travel Management Plans (TMPs). Next up, we have the travel management plan that started it all—the Henry Mountains/Dirty Devil TMP! The remote and stunning landscapes encompassed within this nearly 1.5 million-acre planning area are the heart of Utah’s redrock country—including places like the Dirty Devil Canyon complex, the Henry Mountains, and the badlands surrounding Factory Butte.

TMPs determine where motorized and off-road vehicles are allowed on public lands. Unfortunately, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)’s current TMP for the area is heavily skewed in favor of motorized use at the expense of natural and cultural resources (such as riparian areas and archaeological sites) as well as people seeking quiet and solitude. A new Henry Mountains/Dirty Devil plan, which we’ll soon see a draft of, is an opportunity for BLM to bring a more balanced approach.

Why so many new travel plans? This plan is one of 11 TMPs the BLM is completing over the next few years as part of a 2017 court-supervised settlement agreement between the agency, conservation organizations (including SUWA), and off-road vehicle groups. Covering more than 6 million acres of BLM-managed lands in eastern and southern Utah, these plans determine where motorized vehicles will be allowed on some of Utah’s wildest public lands. To date, the BLM has completed three of the 11 plans.
