SUWA has received questions today about a recently filed proposal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to dam Long Canyon – a magnificent red rock canyon located just outside of Moab, Utah (http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-03-30/html/2012-7642.htm). Long Canyon, which flows directly into the Colorado River, is known for fantastic recreational opportunities as well as providing critical habitat for species such as desert bighorn sheep. This new proposal, submitted by Utah Independent Power, Inc. of Sonoma, California, is similar to a 2008 proposal by the same company in both general objectives and ridiculousness.
Like its 2008 predecessor, this proposal is little more than the pipe dream of a speculative, out of touch proponent. The 2008 proposal never saw the light of day and we expect the same for this similarly nonsensical plan. Nevertheless, it’s important that FERC hears your thoughts and we encourage you to comment in opposition to this ridiculous project.
FERC is taking public comment on the preliminary permit application until May 22, 2012. SUWA will be submitting comments on the proposal as well and we will post updates if the project moves past this preliminary stage. Comments can be submitted at http://www.ferc.gov/docs-filing/ecomment.asp.
