Engaging and educational from start to finish, the festival will include cultural performances and entertainment (individual performers will be announced soon), art installations focused on connections to the landscape, family-friendly activities for kids, and a resource fair with booths from environmental nonprofits, local parks departments, and conservation-minded businesses. The festival will engage the local students and marginalized communities in conservation and community organizing efforts, as well as education on environmental issues and sustainable practices.
“The Latinx Conservation Week Festival is a powerful celebration that brings people together to honor culture, heritage, and community. It is a time to uplift one another, take pride in our roots, and recognize the importance of representation. For NISU, hosting this event at SLCC is vital—it not only brings visibility to the importance of higher education for BIPOC communities, but also provides an opportunity for students to engage with cultural awareness and learn about the missions of the organizations we support,” said Fernando Alexandro Rodriguez Camarena, Club President of the Native Indigenous Student Union (NISU). “NISU is committed to breaking colonial patterns by creating spaces rooted in community, education, and solidarity. Supporting each other is a meaningful act of decolonization, and through this festival, we aim to show what BIPOC unity and love truly look like. This event is more than a celebration; it is a reflection of our collective strength and a step toward lasting change.
“The Latinx Conservation Week Festival draws attention to the deep heritage and connection that Latinx, BIPOC, and Indigenous groups have to the landscape here in Utah,” said Diana Haro, Organizing Director & Comunidad Latina Organizer for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA). “We are proud to be partners and are inspired by the endless enthusiasm and passion the Native Indigenous Student Union organizers are bringing to this year’s event.”
