Yesterday, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA), @wildernesssociety (TWS), and @conservationlands (CLF) filed a motion to intervene in federal court to defend the Bureau of Land Management’s recently finalized Public Land Rule. The motion comes in response to a case and motion for preliminary injunction filed by the states of Utah and Wyoming that seeks to prevent the BLM from implementing the rule which went into effect in June after a year-long process to engage the public in its development. Conservation groups celebrated the finalization of the rule, which was overwhelmingly supported during the comment period, and are now engaging to defend it from attacks. As with all things in the desert, the weather give

As with all things in the desert, the weather gives us pause. Here at the midpoint of our 2024 Stewardship Season, as monsoon storms fill washes and the summer heat sets in, we pause to reflect on where we’ve been, the work we’ve done, and to share with you a few stories from the field.

Check out our latest blog post (link in bio) that features a brief snapshot of the first half of the season by our new stewardship coordinators (we are so lucky to have them). They joined us earlier this year and serve as lead facilitators and project developers for each trip. They have run the gamut this spring, traveling to wilderness-quality lands across Utah and working with our stalwart volunteers to ensure these wild places are protected as they deserve.

A key thing to know about our Stewardship program is that we restore—not develop—our public lands. While many organizations (and state and federal agencies) emphasize unlimited recreation growth and its associated infrastructure, we focus on the restoration of lands identified as wilderness. This means we don’t do trail work.

We restore the impacts of trails and non-permitted routes. We address illegal off-route motorized travel. We educate. We pick up trash. We restore wild places by removing the traces of human presence while utilizing natural resources to subtly deter further impacts. If you don’t know we’ve been there, then we’ve done our job.

As we take this moment to reflect on the season so far, we also invite you to join us on a project—our West Desert and Poison Spring Canyon projects in particular need a few additional volunteers. It’s important to note, we work hard but we also have fun! If you have any questions, please reach out to our team at volunteer@suwa.org.

📣 Take Action! A Florida-based developer has proposed a 480-foot communications tower on a state-owned piece of land in the heart of Bears Ears National Monument. The proposed tower would be taller than the tallest building in Utah—and blinking lights would make it impossible to escape the visual impact throughout much of Bears Ears, as well as from portions of Natural Bridges National Monument.
