Over the last year, elected officials in Utah and Over the last year, elected officials in Utah and U.S. Congress have attempted to advance proposals that would fundamentally dismantle our very system of federal public lands.

Politicians like Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Celeste Maloy have openly argued for selling off public lands to private interests, while Governor Spencer Cox and others attempted the sale of 18.5 million acres of federal land—and we don't expect them to let up anytime soon. A closed-door meeting earlier this month about the national parks in Utah—designed specifically to avoid open meetings laws—has SUWA closely monitoring the state’s activities.

If you are able, please make a year-end gift to help us stand firm against renewed attempts to sell off public lands in Utah. (link in bio).

Your donation strengthens our field team’s on-the-ground monitoring—data that we use to hold the BLM accountable. It powers our legal team as they dig into the nitty-gritty of environmental law. It energizes our grassroots organizers, whose rapid-response efforts helped stop an attempted land sell-off in the U.S. Senate this year. And it supports our staff in Washington DC, who work with lawmakers and national partners to block harmful proposals before they gain traction.

For more than four decades, SUWA has effectively defended the wildness of Utah’s redrock country. Today, we’re also fighting for something more fundamental: the continued existence of public lands themselves. #protectwildutah

Yesterday, during a closed-door meeting, the State Yesterday, during a closed-door meeting, the State of Utah laid out its latest effort to undermine and dismantle the nation’s public lands system: a plan for the State to have significant influence over national parks, especially in the area of visitor use, management, and new development. The “workshop” appears to have been specifically tailored to avoid Utah’s open meetings laws by inviting numerous county commissioners and legislators, but at numbers right below the threshold that would have required the meeting be open to the public.
