Victory in the Battle to Protect Indian Creek from ATV Proliferation!

Aug 24th, 2015 Written by Neal Clark

It’s a sad day for ATV “enthusiasts” in San Juan County and it’s back to the drawing board for the Monticello BLM. On August 10, 2015, pursuant to a motion filed by the BLM, the Interior Board of Land Appeals (“Board”) issued an order vacating the BLM’s approval of the...

Coal Strip Mine Proposed Near Bryce Canyon

Jul 9th, 2015 Written by Steve Bloch

Some bad ideas just don’t go away. In 2011, with your help, we sent a clear message to the BLM to “just say no” to a proposed coal lease on the western doorstep of Bryce Canyon National Park. So did the National Park Service. So did the U.S. Fish and...

A new Senate bill, the American Affordability and A new Senate bill, the American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 (BAAJA), could move forward as soon as November 9. While it's being promoted as a jobs and affordability measure, it could have major consequences for public lands and some of Utah's wildest places.

The bill undermines Tribal sovereignty and rewrites provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act that would restrict what is considered an important cultural site, and make consultation with Tribes and communities optional. This bill also fast-tracks data center proposals on public lands—proposals like Project Beehive in Carbon County, Utah and many more awful things.

📣 Tell the Forest Service to follow the Bears Ears 📣 Tell the Forest Service to follow the Bears Ears Plan for Babylon fire recovery! 🌲 (link in bio)

In late June, the Babylon Fire burned roughly 107,000 acres of the Elk Ridge landscape west of Monticello, Utah. This is the high country above Dark Canyon Wilderness, lying almost entirely within Bears Ears National Monument. Helping this landscape recover should mean protecting its cultural sites, fragile soils, streams, and wildlife.

The Forest Service is accepting public comments through Tuesday, November 3. Please tell the agency to follow the Bears Ears plan, meaningfully involve Tribes, and put ecological recovery ahead of commercial logging!

41 new mining claims have recently been located in 41 new mining claims have recently been located in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument – 13 in the shrunken Monument, six that may be in the shrunken Monument, and 22 in lands that were previously protected.

The previously protected lands became subject to mining claims on Friday, September 11 – 60 days after President Trump decimated Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears by shrinking these national monuments by over 90%. Lands within the reduced Monument remain closed to mining claims and any/all newly located claims here are invalid.

The new mining claims, all filed by Dan W. Proctor, are in three general areas: (1) Colt Mesa, (2) near Studhorse Peaks; and (3) on the northern edge of the reduced Monument, close to where it borders the Dixie National Forest, south of the Circle Cliffs.

The exact location of the 6 mining claims won’t be confirmed until the paperwork accompanying the recordation of the claims is reviewed. The public won’t know the size of any proposed operations until Mr. Proctor files paperwork with the Bureau of Land Management
