Utah state Senator Jim Dabakis has just introduced a resolution in the Utah legislature in support of Congressional or Executive action to protect Greater Canyonlands—a watershed moment in the effort to preserve it for future generations. The sponsor of the resolution in the Utah House of Representatives is Representative Patrice Arent.

Greater Canyonlands is a wonder in the redrock, but its sweeping red mesas, diverse desert life forms and ancient archaeological sites are threatened by off-road vehicles, oil and gas development and even a proposed tar sands mine. The courageous action of Senator Dabakis and Representative Arent is a game changer—shifting the conversation in Utah’s Legislature from one about “drill baby drill” to “what needs to be protected?”

Utah’s Capitol Hill is often a hostile place for Utah’s public lands. Gov. Gary Herbert wants to seize federal lands from public ownership, and has sued the United States over claims to thousands of miles of ghost routes and cow trails criss-crossing some of the wildest country in the lower 48 states. But Sen. Dabakis and Representative Arent understand that the landscape of Greater Canyonlands is unique to the world, and a vital part of Utah’s thriving $5.8 billion outdoor recreation economy.
