Today, during a court hearing over the pending law

Today, during a court hearing over the pending lawsuit, SUWA v. Cox, the State of Utah concedes that the taxpayer-funded “Stand for our Land” Litigation and public relations campaign, which implies that federal public lands would be turned over to the state of Utah for management, is blatantly misleading.

The State of Utah is currently spending millions of taxpayer dollars on a legal and media campaign with the goal of forcing the federal government to sell more than 18.5 million acres of public lands in Utah managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

We are halfway through our 10th year of Stewardshi

We are halfway through our 10th year of Stewardship! We've spent the first half of 2025 in familiar territory—from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments to proposed wilderness in Utah’s West Desert to the designated wilderness of Emery County and the San Rafael Swell. Our work includes helping land managers rehabilitate backcountry campsites, install signage and fencing, naturalize landscapes impacted by motorized use, and survey sensitive cultural sites.

Of course, we couldn’t do all of this without incredible people like you. We are currently recruiting volunteers for both summer and fall projects and we invite you to join us in the field! Below is a glance at a few projects we are in need of more volunteers for.

🦌 July 14-17 | Bears Ears: Elk Ridge: Work with us to continue our travel management efforts high in the aspens beneath the Bears Ears Buttes!
🏜 August 12 - 14 | Desolation Wilds: Join us for renaturalization efforts on the rims above Nine Mile Canyon!
⛰ August 18 - 23 | Deep Creek Mountains: Backpack into the West Desert's Deep Creek Range to rehabilitate and restore wilderness characteristics.

Many participants tell us this is the most rewarding thing they’ve done in support of Utah’s wild landscapes—a collaborative effort that brings us together in times of upheaval. Why not take a short break from calling and writing your members of Congress to breathe the sage-scented air, learn new skills, make new friends!? The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) has been at the forefront of protecting redrock wilderness in Utah for over four decades. The Protect Wild Utah movement has lost a giant: D

The Protect Wild Utah movement has lost a giant: Darrell Knuffke passed away peacefully last week, surrounded by his family. Darrell was an over 30-year SUWA Board Member and served as Chair of the Board of Directors from 2008-2016. A fierce and unwavering defender of wilderness to his core, he will be remembered as a powerhouse of an advocate, but also to many of us as a wryly funny and beloved friend and mentor.

When Darrell was interviewed for SUWA’s 40th anniversary (video link in bio), he said, “‘From the very beginning, SUWA knew the land better than the agency that manages most of it. We made that our business. And right now, we can still claim to know more than anybody about what redrock country looks like.”

And that’s in no small part because of Darrell’s efforts and his vision for the organization. He was a founding pillar of SUWA, and all of us who care about Utah’s wild places are standing on his shoulders today. Darrell leaves behind a remarkable legacy -- one filled with protected wild landscapes and the cultivation of new leaders and advocates that will honor his memory. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The next issue of our newsletter will contain an appreciation of Darrell and his many contributions to the wilderness movement.

On July 3rd, The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) a

On July 3rd, The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced it had completed an “accelerated environmental review process” and approved a significant expansion of the Wildcat Loadout Facility near Helper, UT. The facility is used to transfer Uinta Basin crude oil from tanker trucks to rail cars. The expansion is intended to push an additional 80,000 barrels of crude oil per day traveling on train tracks along the Colorado River, raising the risk of oil spills and other accidents.
