Today, the Brian Head Land Conveyance Act (S. 1860

Today, the Brian Head Land Conveyance Act (S. 1860) moved through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and is now eligible for a vote in the full Senate. This legislation, sponsored by Senator Mike Lee, would give away—at no cost—24 acres of public land within the Dixie National Forest to the town of Brian Head.

As the bill is currently written, it establishes only vague standards for how the town of Brian Head can use the federal land and there is no effective mechanism to enforce those limits. The bill contains a clause that would make it extremely difficult for the U.S. Forest Service to recover the land should the town of Brian Head fail to use the land as described in the bill.

Why does SUWA maintain a permanent presence in Washington, DC? Because the redrock wilderness is federal public land—and the most consequential decisions about its future are made there. Being on the ground in DC allows our staff to lobby members of Congress, meet directly with administration officials, attend hearings, track legislative maneuvering, and push back in real time when bad ideas threaten how these landscapes are managed.

Unfortunately, this year has been especially brutal for public lands with congressional attacks ranging from the unprecedented sell-off proposals, efforts to rollback land management plans, bills expanding motorized vehicle use in protected areas, and harmful provisions buried in the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”.

In the meantime, the Trump administration has moved to hollow out the Bureau of Land Management and other land management agencies through budget cuts, hiring freezes, and catastrophic staffing shortages—while Congress has largely stood by.

This Wednesday, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a markup on multiple bills, including S.1860, the Brian Head Town Land Conveyance Act. This legislation, introduced by Utah Senator Mike Lee, would transfer, at no cost, 24 acres of public land within the Dixie National Forest to the town of Brian Head in Utah.

If you live in one of the following states: UT, WY, ID, MT, AR, PA, WV, LA, MS, ND, NM, OR, WA, HI, ME, NV, CO, CA, AZ, AK, your senator sits on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and will have an opportunity to vote to advance or stop this legislation during the committee markup on Wednesday.

As the bill is written, it authorizes the town to use the land for a public works facility or “any other purposes as determined by local officials,” meaning there is nothing to prevent the town from transferring or selling the land into private hands.

This legislation grants federal land for free, with no requirement for public review or environmental assessment—setting a concerning precedent for public land nationwide.
