Salt Lake City, UT  (March 30, 2023) – In response to today’s announcement by the Bureau of Land Management that it is updating the rules for managing our nation’s public lands, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance’s legal director, Stephen Bloch, issued the following statement:

“This is a long overdue step to ‘raise the floor’ for how America’s public lands are managed. For too long, these lands have been focused on short-term gain at the expense of long-term health. The Bureau of Land Management’s public lands rule aims to level the playing field and make sure our shared lands, water, and outstanding places will be here for current and future generations to enjoy. This is especially important in Utah, where the desert ecosystem supporting Utah’s redrock country is under tremendous stress from drought, a dramatically warmer climate, and increasing pressure from development and tourism.”
