San Juan County Residents: Make Your Voice Heard!
This may be a once in a generation opportunity to protect wilderness in San Juan County
Can you take 20 minutes right now to send an email to the San Juan County Commission encouraging them to protect proposed wilderness areas in San Juan County as part of Rep. Rob Bishop’s proposed Public Lands Bill for Southeastern Utah?
Background:
Congressman Bishop’s public lands bill proposal would create national legislation to define and create an array of public land management designations, including wilderness designation, for several counties in southeastern Utah, including San Juan County.
Last November, the County Commission issued a questionnaire inviting residents to say whether the County should participate in the Bishop initiative. A majority said Yes. Now is a good time to provide further input to the County Commissioners as they will be passing on their more specific recommendations to Representatives Bishop and Chaffetz over the next few months.
What Your Email Should Say:
Letters that mention specific areas in San Juan County that are proposed as wilderness in America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act will have the most impact. A list and map of proposed wilderness areas in San Juan County can be found at the bottom of this page.
In your letter:
- Identify yourself as a San Juan County resident
- State that you support protecting a large amount of wilderness in San Juan County
- Mention specific wilderness areas, and how often you visit them, or why you value them. Tell your story.
- Make any other point you wish to make about public land use in San Juan County!
- Include maps or photographs, if you wish.
