Today, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance filed Today, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance filed a lawsuit in federal district court challenging the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) 2019 decision to approve a nearly 125,000-acre potash mining project, the Sevier Playa Potash (SPP) Project, as well as BLM’s 2025 decision approving a modified version of the Project.

Together, BLM’s decisions set the stage for the SPP Project to impact and damage Utah’s remote West Desert for decades. BLM failed to consider the full range of environmental impacts from this large-scale industrial development, including impacts to groundwater, migratory birds, and dark night skies, all in violation of federal environmental law.

Background info on Sevier Lake and SUWA’s litigation can be found at the link in our bio. #protectwildutah #mining #publicland
SUWA has been at the forefront of protecting the r SUWA has been at the forefront of protecting the redrock wilderness for over four decades. In that time we have gained protections for more than five million acres of wild lands, and fought off countless attacks against public lands across Utah. Folks often reach out and wonder what else they can do to protect the redrock, here's how:

Join our monthly giving program! For as little as $5 per month, you can support our work throughout the year and help us defend public lands against the on-going threats of the current administration. Visit suwa.org/monthly25 to become a monthly donor.

Be on the lookout for Advocacy Actions, where you can submit comments to the BLM or reach out to your congressional reps. (Right now there is one to protect the southern part of the Uinta Basin from oil & gas development).

Lastly, you can join a stewardship trip and give back to public lands hands-on style. Visit suwa.org/stewardship to learn more.

SUWA's Legal Director, Steve Bloch, explains it's 55-year history and how the current administration is dismantling environmental law strategically, by eliminating agency regulations and expediting fossil fuel projects without review.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is moving forward with plans to sell 46 oil and gas leases encompassing over 68,200 acres in Utah. The majority of these public lands provide important habitat for greater sage-grouse (an imperiled bird) and/or Graham's beardtongue (a flowering plant unique to the area).

Several of the lease parcels are within the Lower Bitter Creek and/or Sunday School Canyon areas—largely unspoiled natural regions in the southern Uinta Basin which contain lands identified as wilderness-caliber. These high desert areas combine to form a sizable oasis amid the oil and gas development that dominates other parts of the Basin, providing valuable wildlife habitat, outstanding views of the surrounding landscape, and excellent opportunities for hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing.

Please take a moment to tell the BLM that these areas are too special to open to oil and gas development! The agency is accepting public comments through Friday, August 8th. #protectwildutah
