Just over two weeks since President Trump decimate

Just over two weeks since President Trump decimated Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments, the administration is racing ahead with its work to try and erase the National Monuments from both the landscape and public awareness.

Last week, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) removed signage from Bears Ears National Monument, starting with the Tribal seals representing the 5 Tribes of the Bears Ears Commission and quickly escalating to the complete removal of the monument signs themselves. By Tuesday, July 28, signs signifying the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument had also been removed from at least 5 gateway locations.

These signs play both a practical and symbolic role. They mark the entrances to the national monuments for visitors, indicating that these areas are some of the nation’s most important protected public landscapes that together protect over a hundred thousand ancestral cultural sites. For Bears Ears, the signs made visible the role of Tribal Nations in co-managing and stewarding their ancestral lands.

In April, when this administration first announced

In April, when this administration first announced they wanted to open the Greater Chaco Canyon region in New Mexico to oil and gas drilling we asked you to speak up— thank you to everyone who did. Even after receiving 100,000 comments opposing these rollbacks, the Department of the Interior (DOI) is considering two options— revoking protections entirely or shrinking the current protection buffer to just 5 miles, both of which are both unacceptable.

In either scenario, thousands of cultural sites would be exposed to drilling. Indigenous communities already living with the health impacts of over 37,000 nearby wells would face even more industrial development at their doorstep.

Not in Utah? You can still join us in solidarity as we protest Trump's action to slash nearly three million acres of protections for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Post a photo of you in one of the monuments or take a photo holding a sign of support, sharing your story and why you want to see National Monuments protected. Post to social and tag your congress members!

Most importantly, encourage folks to follow the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition (@bearsearscoalition) and the Grand Staircase-Escalante Inter-Tribal Coalition (@grandstaircasecoalition) to show solidarity with the Tribes who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial.

Bring your friends, a sign (we’ll provide some too), and be ready to raise your voice against the Utah politicians who supported Trump's actions—reducing both Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.
