We recently wrapped our 2024 Stewardship season, completing our program’s ninth season with a total of 25 projects (this year), and a grand total of 179 projects.

As we see it, stewardship is our land ethic in action, a way of honoring the relationship between people and the places that sustain them. The mission of SUWA’s Stewardship Program is to foster this shared ethic and provide opportunities for volunteers to directly preserve and enhance the wild character of public lands in Utah. This is accomplished through hands-on stewardship projects that support and guide federal land managers in their efforts to protect wild landscapes from human impacts and promote long-term resilience.

This year, 202 SUWA stewards committed a total of 74 workdays and completed 3,780 volunteer hours. Forty-four miles of incursions into lands comprising America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act were naturalized with nearly half a million square feet of red rock desert physically remediated by hand, rake, pick, shovel and sweat. At present, the Stew Crew is traveling far and wide to meet with our partners at the BLM, USFS and NPS to schedule 2025 stewardship projects. As we enter the next epoch of national political turmoil, our program remains committed to doing all that it takes to protect Utah’s wild places hands-on. There is work to be done, resources are sparse and help is needed.

We invite you to join us in the work as we continue to put our ethics into practice by protecting the places we love. Our 2025 volunteer project calendar goes live on February 1st, with early access open to SUWA members on January 30th. For more specifics of our work, read our 2024 end of season blog (link in bio).

Save the Date! Join us for a public lands rally— “Standing Together: Land Love & Hope” on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Noon on the South Steps of the Utah State Capitol! At a time when public lands in Utah are under attack, this rally will show unwavering local support for protected public lands and wild places across Utah, especially Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.

In the upcoming weeks, we’ll share additional details, including speakers, what to expect day-of, ways to participate if you can’t join us in person, and more. As we close out the year, the future of public lan

As we close out the year, the future of public lands in Utah hangs in the balance. From the stunning landscapes of Bears Ears and Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monuments to the rugged beauty of Labyrinth Canyon and the Dirty Devil, we hold these lands near and dear to our heart.

With the incoming administration, threats to America’s wilderness are expected to escalate dramatically. Whether it’s gutting monument protections or opening public lands to a fossil fuel free-for-all, the challenges ahead will test us like never before. Trump’s energy policies and Utah’s political leadership will no doubt work hand-in-hand to prioritize mining, drilling, and development over conservation and attempt to seize control of vast wild landscapes in the name of profit. We have work ahead of us.
