Today, the preliminary alternatives for the Henry

Today, the preliminary alternatives for the Henry Mountains/Dirty Devil motorized vehicle Travel Management Plan (which determines where motorized recreation is allowed) was released by the BLM.

The area is at the heart of canyon country and includes roughly 1,150,000 acres of BLM-managed lands primarily within the Richfield Field Office’s Henry Mountains Field Station. It is made up of several distinct and renowned landscapes, including the Dirty Devil Canyon complex (which the Navajo Nation has identified as a Traditional Cultural Property; the complex also includes Butch Cassidy’s infamous hideout, Robber’s Roost), the Henry Mountains (the last mountain range to be mapped in the lower 48 states), and the stunning badlands surrounding Factory Butte (named by early settlers who thought its outline resembled a huge factory building).

Right now, the public comment period for the draft

Right now, the public comment period for the draft management plan for Bears Ears National Monument is underway. SUWA staff and activists have been attending the various public meetings hosted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the US Forest Service (USFS) regarding the plan—as have hundreds of other people who are interested in this landscape!

It's clear Bears Ears National Monument is a region of extraordinary natural diversity and cultural significance.
The federal agencies have shared 5 possible alternatives. Alternative E is identified as the BLM’s preferred alternative, as well as the Tribal Alternative— it was developed by the agencies in consultation with the five Tribes of the Bears Ears Commission (Navajo, Pueblo of Zuni, Hopi, Ute, and Ute Mountain Ute). Be on the lookout for an easy-to-complete advocacy action coming next week from SUWA.

Today is National Tourism Day! Over the past decade we have seen a rapid expansion of tourism to Utah’s public lands. With millions of people visiting southern Utah each year, there are adverse impacts to wilderness values, wildlife, and natural and cultural resources which is why we encourage everyone to do their part.

We'd like to take a moment to remind visitors to visit responsibility. Our friends at @visitwithrespect_ have created a campaign that promotes 19 key tips to help visitors enhance their experience and ensure future visitors can share in the same experience. SUWA is seeking a summer/fall intern to support gr

SUWA is seeking a summer/fall intern to support grassroots organizing among Latinx communities in Utah and will work closely with our Latinx Community Organizer. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience into the day-to-day functions of non-profit grassroots organizing with one of the country’s leading conservation campaigns. The experience offers insight into environmental campaign planning, education, organizing and activism.

This internship runs from June–September 2024 and is based in Salt Lake City with travel throughout the valley, across the Wasatch Front, and Southern Utah, if needed. Access to reliable transportation and ability to transport materials is required.

Send a one-page resume and a one-page cover letter summarizing why you’re the best candidate, where this opportunity fits into your career goals, and what you intend to do with the experience.
