SUWA is seeking a summer/fall intern to support gr

SUWA is seeking a summer/fall intern to support grassroots organizing among Latinx communities in Utah and will work closely with our Latinx Community Organizer. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience into the day-to-day functions of non-profit grassroots organizing with one of the country’s leading conservation campaigns. The experience offers insight into environmental campaign planning, education, organizing and activism.

This internship runs from June–September 2024 and is based in Salt Lake City with travel throughout the valley, across the Wasatch Front, and Southern Utah, if needed. Access to reliable transportation and ability to transport materials is required.

Send a one-page resume and a one-page cover letter summarizing why you’re the best candidate, where this opportunity fits into your career goals, and what you intend to do with the experience. It was a magical weekend filled with learning, exploration, great conversation, and amazing views. We couldn't have done it without the help of our hosts, @grandstaircasepartners, who kept us fed, entertained, and safe.

A vote by the U.S. House of Representatives is anticipated Tuesday on the WEST Act. This federal legislation, introduced by Rep. John Curtis would require the Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to withdraw the recently finalized Public Lands Rule.

As National Park Week comes to a close, we’d like to celebrate all protected places in Utah! Did you know four out of the five national parks in Utah originally began as national monuments?⁠ ⁠

🏜️ Zion National Park⁠ (previously Mukuntaweap National Monument)⁠
🏜️ Bryce Canyon National Park (previously Bryce Canyon National Monument)⁠ ⁠
🏜️ Arches National Park⁠ (previously Arches National Monument)⁠ ⁠
🏜️ Capitol Reef National Park⁠ (previously Capitol Reef National Monument)⁠ ⁠

As you may know, the Antiquities Act is a tool that provides the opportunity to conserve lands with natural, historical and cultural characteristics by designating them as national monuments.

Today, Utah has a total of eight national monuments, some of which you may recognize—Natural Bridges National Monument⁠, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument⁠, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Bears Ears National Monument⁠, and others. It is important to remember when visiting these special places to visit with respect.

We are thankful for the leaders who (past and present) have utilized the Antiquities Act thoughtfully, and we look with hope upon how we continue to move conservation forward in the United States.⁠

Today, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on

Today, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands held a Field Hearing in Hurricane, UT. A variety of topics were covered, including the proposed Northern Corridor Highway through the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (NCA) and the recently finalized Public Lands Rule. Below is a statement from Travis Hammill, SUWA’s DC Director.

“Today’s partisan hearing was out of touch with local and national support for protecting public lands— especially the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area. Despite a hearing title that included the phrase “Empowering Local Voices,” no members of the public were allowed to speak. Local community members sporting “No Highway thru Red Cliffs” stickers made up a majority of the audience and the message was clear,” — Travis Hammill
