SUMMARY:Westwater Canyon WSA Service Project
DESCRIPTION:Apply Now <– Submit your application today!\nDon’t forget to complete the Volunteer Agreement. \nIf you have questions\, please don’t hesitate to contact our program coordinator:\nvolunteer@suwa.org  or  (435) 259-9151. \nRead on to learn more about our project and site! \n\nThe Land \nThe Westwater Canyon WSA spans the Westwater Canyon portion of the Colorado River with the eastern two-thirds of these protected lands located in the Dolores Triangle. Major tributary canyons on the east side of the river include Little Dolores\, Marble\, and Star canyons. A short box canyon\, Little Hole\, and a rincon (Big Hole) are the main features northwest of the river corridor. Up on the highlands\, pinyon-juniper woodlands cover over half of the WSA\, with the remaining cover consisting of sagebrush and blackbrush. The canyon itself features unique geologic features including black\, pre-Cambrian rock\, the oldest exposed rock in Utah\, which forms Westwater’s inner canyon. \nLocal land management is facing increased impacts from motorized travel beyond authorized routes in the Dolores Triangle and into the Westwater Canyon WSA. This travel results in damage to local ecologies\, as well as significant disturbance to the wilderness quality and characteristics of the WSA.\n \nThe Work \nOur crew will work to define the boundary of the Westwater Canyon WSA where it interfaces with the Dolores Triangle’s motorized travel areas. We will install fencing and reclaim the illegal route into the WSA. Our strategies will focus on naturalization and preventing further illegal travel.  8-10 spaces are available. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nfence and wilderness boundary sign installation;\nvertical mulching and track/tread raking;\nmanual reclamation (with hand tools) of visually disturbed surface\n\nOur Objective: To remediate the existing impacts of illegal motorized travel and prevent subsequent travel into protected wilderness study areas. To protect the wilderness-quality of Westwater Canyon WSA. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nFriday\, Sept 28th: Optional Camping at Roberts Bottom or nearby.\nSaturday\, Sept 29th: Day 1. Meet at Roberts Bottom @ 9:00AM. Carpool/caravan to site.\nSunday\, Sept 30th: Day 2. Breakfast 8:00AM. Work into the afternoon.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 2 – Our most common trip incorporates mid- to heavy-lifting\, work in remote landscapes at varying elevations\, an increased diversity of tool use\, and an emphasis on physical fitness and hiking competency. \n\nCamping & Meals \nVolunteers will camp on site. Specific location will be indicated in the Welcome Letter provided to registered volunteers. \nSUWA provides (1) dinner\, (1) breakfast\, and snacks during the project. Volunteers are responsible for all additional meals – and water – during their stay. \n*Please Note: We are required to carry out all [human & other] waste for this project. Please bring wagbags or an appropriate personal waste management system. \n\nVolunteer Responsibilities \nParticipants are responsible for their own food\, water and camping gear as well as transportation to and from the project site(s). Come grab some chow from a local food truck\, some suds from a Utah original\, and watch passionate Utahns speak on behalf of the redrock country they love\, and the importance of acting to protect them. “Wild Utah” is only 15 minutes long\, so we’ll run it more than once in the evening. Dress in layers\, as we’ll be outside under night’s cover in the Fisher courtyard. \nThe all ages premiere will take place at the Patagonia Outlet on October 9 from 7:00-9:00 PM.

The Anasazi (“Ancient Ones”) flourished in Grand Gulch between 700 and 2\,000 years ago. The fact that so many sites remain–and that they are in such excellent condition–makes Grand Gulch a special area.  \nThroughout the mesas and canyons of Southeastern Utah\, there are countless places important to Native Americans and to the non-Indians who live or visit here. During your stay\, recognize how important these sites are to all of us: Native Americans\, non-Indians\, historians\, and archaeologists. You will see dwellings\, pottery\, tools\, and art work. \nThe earliest known Anasazi inhabitants of Grand Gulch were the Basket Makers\, who lived here from A.D. 200 to 700. This culture is thought to have derived from earlier nomad hunters and gatherers\, but artifacts from the Basketmaker period are the oldest yet found in the Gulch. When the nomadic people learned to plant and cultivate corn introduced from the south\, they became more settled\, and the Basketmaker cultured evolved. \nGrand Gulch’s environment can be extremely harsh at certain times of the year. You will probably find spring and fall to be the most comfortable periods. Spring rains usually end around the middle of May. The weather is hot from June through August and it is not uncommon for the temperature to rise past 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer rains come in late July or early August\, bringing flash flood hazards. In the winter months\, snow and ice cling to the canyons\, and temperatures often fall below zero. \n  \n\nThe Work \nWe will be hiking select canyons to address impacts of user-created social trails and illegal campsites. Get ready for a few long days of hiking in one of Utah’s most beautiful landscapes! \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nbrush management and vertical mulching;\nsocial trail reclamation;\ncampsite clean-up\n\nOur Objective: To eliminate trace and consequence of user-created hiking impacts throughout the canyons of the Grand Gulch Primitive Area. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nFriday\, October 19th: Optional early arrival and camping opportunity.\nSaturday\, October 20th: Day 1 of Project. We will gather at 7:30am for workday orientation.\nSunday\, October 21st: We will gather at 8:00am after breakfast. We will work until 3:30pm.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 3 – Heavy lifting\, high-elevation\, remote travel\, and extended durations away from common conveniences. Leave No Trace principles are essential during all of our trips but require the most thought and planning at Level 3. These trips may involve on-site training for technical skills and tool use. Excellent physical fitness is a must at this level. \n  \n\nCamping & Meals \nVolunteers will camp on site. The immediate area consists of a broad\, gently rolling valley bracketed by the sandstone cliffs of Harts Point to the northeast and Bridger Jack Mesa to the southwest. The valley is bisected by both the major thoroughfare of Highway 211 and Indian Creek itself. From Highway 211\, the interior of the valley is a classic western landscape with panoramic vistas\, towering sandstone cliffs and spires\, and rolling grasslands. \nThe Indian Creek Corridor is highly traveled by a diversity of recreationists\, including: hiking\, \nbiking\, cultural resource viewing\, camping\, off-highway vehicle (OHV) use\, rock climbing\, horseback riding\, wildlife viewing\, sightseeing and scenic photography. These features attract visitors from around the world\, a trend that is increasing with recent media coverage of national monuments in southern Utah. \nProject Site #2 is Butler Wash\, a repository of cultural heritage\, artifacts and present-day sacred sites for local and regional Native American tribes. \nThe Bureau of Land Management is working to selectively develop high-impact areas in a broad scale effort to manage increased use and travel in the monument. BLM Rangers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about planning efforts related to the designation of Bears Ears National Monument. \nThough accessible by vehicle\, Indian Creek is a remote region of southern Utah and we request that our volunteers come prepared to respect and accommodate a wilderness setting rich with ecological\, cultural and archeological sites. Further information is proved below. \nFor additional background and resources covering the broader Bears Ears National Monument area\, visit the Bureau of Land Management’s website here. \n\nThe Work \nOur work will establish base infrastructure to manage escalating impacts of growing visitation in bears Ears National Monument. We will be prepping for and installing post & rail and buck & rail fencing at various sites. For those looking for a hearty late fall workout\, this project is for you! \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\npreparation/digging for fence installation;\nfence assembly and installation;\nloading and carrying needed materials and tools to site;\nsign and informational kiosk installation\n\nOur Objective: To establish targeted infrastructure that contains and alleviates the pressure and impacts of growing visitation on surrounding natural and cultural resources. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nMonday\, October 29th: Day 1 at Indian Creek [FULL].\nTuesday\, October 30th: Day 2 at Butler Wash [OPEN].\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 2 – Our most common trip incorporates mid- to heavy-lifting\, work in remote landscapes at varying elevations\, an increased diversity of tool use\, and an emphasis on physical fitness and hiking competency. \n\nCamping & Meals \nVolunteers will camp on site at the Superbowl Campground along the Indian Creek corridor in Bears Ears National Monument. Specific sites will be indicated in the Welcome Letter provided to registered volunteers. Butler Wash is a single day project. \nSUWA provides (1) meal per day and snacks during the project. Volunteers are responsible for all additional meals during their stay. \n\nVolunteer Responsibilities \nParticipants are responsible for their own food\, water and camping gear as well as transportation to and from the project site(s). Volunteers should plan to be away from camp all day each of the work days. A recommended pack list will be sent along with the project Welcome Letter two weeks prior to the start date. \n\nRegistration \nA Volunteer Agreement is required for this project. \n \nWhen we have received your form\, you will receive a confirmation e-mail within 5 working days of submission. This year\, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) auctioned hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in Utah for oil and gas development. Many parcels sold sit adjacent to some of our most cherished landscapes like Bears Ears National Monument and the San Rafael Swell — just to name a few. \nOn Tuesday\, December 11th the BLM will be auctioning off over 150\,000 more acres of public lands including lands adjacent to Canyonlands National Park. SUMMARY:Lost Spring Service Project
DESCRIPTION:The Land \n\n\n\nLost Spring Canyon is the northernmost unit of Arches National Park. This 3\,140-acre area was added to the park in 1998. The Bureau of Land Management administered the area as a Wilderness Study Area since 1985\, though Lost Spring Canyon had been grazed for years. When it was added to Arches\, the Grand Canyon Trust purchased the grazing permit and donated it to the National Park Service. Livestock were removed and fenced out\, enabling the National Park Service to begin vegetation monitoring\, protection and restoration efforts. In addition\, the removal of livestock has eliminated potential conflicts between recreational backcountry visitors and active livestock operations. A major point of motorized access to the area is from I-70 to the north. While some routes remain open\, others were closed in 2008 as a component of travel management planning to ensure protections for localized ecological communities and the preservation of wilderness characteristics. \n\n\n\n \nThe Work \nOur crew will work to enforce existing route closures by effecting clearer boundaries and remediating the impacts of non permitted motorized travel. We will rehabilitate and restore wilderness characteristics through a series of approaches\, including: reclaiming non permitted routes\, establishing temporary\, artificial barriers where vegetation has been removed or decimated\, and disappearing signs of mechanized-human impacts.  8-10 spaces are available. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nbrush fence and WSA boundary sign installation;\nvertical mulching and track/tread raking;\nmanual reclamation (with hand tools) of visually disturbed surface\n\nOur Objective: To ensure compliance with existing travel management rules and regulations in service of localized wilderness-quality lands preservation. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nSunday\, March 10th: Meet in Moab @ 8:15AM. Travel to and from site. Lunch provided.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 2 – Our most common trip incorporates mid- to heavy-lifting\, work in remote landscapes at varying elevations\, an increased diversity of tool use\, and an emphasis on physical fitness and hiking competency. \n\nCamping & Meals \nThere is no planned group camping for this project. SUMMARY:West Desert WSA Service Project
DESCRIPTION:The Land \nUtah’s West Desert is a remote\, sprawling collection of magnificent landscapes containing a series of distinctive “island” ranges including the Deep Creek Mountains\, the House Range\, the Wah-Wahs\, Notch Peak\, and more. Spanning several counties and hundreds of miles of remote roads\, many of the regions spectacular features are protected as wilderness study areas (WSAs) and managed by the local BLM. Limited resources and expansive territory combine for a particular need to recruit volunteers to ensure proper monitoring and maintenance of the West Desert’s diverse and unique landscapes. \n  \nThe Work \n \nOur crew will travel far and wide across the West Desert to install primary wilderness study area boundary signs at all of the lower elevation WSAs accessible in mid-spring. The large declarative signs stand on (2) 4×4 posts which are installed by hand and secured using concrete. In addition\, volunteers will monitor for off-road vehicle and camping compliance at all sites visited\, remediating where appropriate. GPS-taggeds maps will be provided to all volunteers.  5-8 spaces are available. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nprimary WSA boundary sign installation;\ncampsite/route compliance remediation;\nmanual reclamation of visually disturbed surface\n\nOur Objective: To install primary WSA boundary signs across the West Desert to ensure clarity of the location of protected areas. To remediate existing impacts resulting from non permitted travel and camping. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nFriday\, April 5th: Optional early arrival and camping.\nSaturday\, April 6th: Day 1. DESCRIPTION:Presentation & Discussion: \n\nService as Recreation: Hands-on Conservation on Utah’s Public Lands\n \nAbstract: \n \nSUWA’s volunteer service program is focused on the practical\, hands-on address of impacts and impairments to Utah’s wilderness-quality public lands. As visitation continues to outpace agency management capacity\, user impacts to natural and cultural resources increase exponentially. Yet\, it is our choice to view the problem as a solution. Increased visitation means increased (human) resources to address issues and increased opportunities to provide hands-on education from the ground-up. Through organizing and facilitating service projects\, we both support land managers in their efforts to protect wilderness-quality lands and train a new generation of public lands stewards. \n \nOutdoor recreation is a modern frontier of exploration and recreationists can become ambassadors for responsible land stewardship. This 14-minute short\, award winning documentary is an advocacy film for Utah’s last remaining wild places. SUWA advocates for protecting more than 9 million acres of federally managed public lands as Wilderness\, areas of pristine natural beauty\, unique and untrammeled ecosystems\, and unfathomable cultural significance. This film takes the viewer through the diverse landscape and draws upon diverse voices to tell the story of why these lands are worth protecting\, why oil and gas production\, off-road vehicle use\, mining\, and even politicians are risking the integrity of the landscape\, and what can be done to ensure these public lands are protected for generations to come. SUMMARY:Porcupine Rim Service Project
DESCRIPTION:The Land \nThe La Sal Mountains or La Sal Range are located in Grand and San Juan County in southeastern Utah and are managed by the Manti-La Sal office of the United States Forest Service. The range rises above and southeast of Moab\, Utah and is an integral component of the Moab area watershed. It’s rain-fed streams form multiple creek drainages and these waters – along with localized infiltration – recharge the areas many springs\, providing a primary source of drinking water for the valley. Recreation abounds and is expanding along the corridor between the mountains and Sand Flats infiltration zones\, including the pinyon-juniper plateaus linking these upper and lower portions of the greater watershed. Our project site resides here\, at the crossroads of impacts derivative of a highly traveled mountain biking trail and the presence of abundant range cattle. \n \nThe Work \nOur crew will work to protect a cultural/archaeological site from the increased impacts of people and cattle. We will install brush fencing using natural\, found materials to deter livestock and people from trampling and obscuring cultural resources.  8-10 spaces are available. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nbrush fence installation;\nvertical mulching and track/tread raking;\nmanual reclamation (with hand tools) of visually disturbed surface\n\nOur Objective: To protect a cultural site from the impacts of people and cattle. To naturalize the surrounding landscape and ensure clear – though subtle – point of access for visitors. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nFriday\, April 26th: Optional early arrival and camping.\nSaturday\, April 27th: Orientation & Project.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 2 – Our most common trip incorporates mid- to heavy-lifting\, work in remote landscapes at varying elevations\, an increased diversity of tool use\, and an emphasis on physical fitness and hiking competency. \n\nCamping & Meals \nVolunteers will camp on site. Specific location will be indicated in the Welcome Letter provided to registered volunteers. \nSUWA provides (1) lunch and snacks during the project. Volunteers are responsible for all additional meals during their stay. \n\nVolunteer Responsibilities \nParticipants are responsible for their own food\, water and camping gear as well as transportation to and from the project site(s). Volunteers should plan to be away from camp all day each of the work days. A recommended pack list will be sent along with the project Welcome Letter two weeks prior to the start date. \n\nRegistration \nA Volunteer Agreement is required for this project. \n \nWhen we have received your form\, you will receive a confirmation e-mail within 5 working days of submission. The confirmation e-mail will indicate whether you have been placed on the “project roster” or a “waiting list.” \nThree weeks before the start of the trip\, you will receive an RSVP to confirm your participation.
