SUMMARY:Bears Ears National Monument Service Weekend I
DESCRIPTION:The Land \nWhen President Obama used his authority under the Antiquities Act to designate Bears Ears National Monument on December 28th\, 2016\, he granted a new layer of protection to some of the most spectacular \nplaces in southern Utah. There is Cedar Mesa\, with its incredible canyons running toward the San Juan River. There is White Canyon to the west of Natural Bridges. There are the Bears Ears themselves and the high ponderosa forests of Elk Ridge. To the north there’s Beef Basin and Indian Creek. Nearly 100\,000 archaeological and cultural sites were covered by the proclamation\, including House on Fire and Moon House ruins. \nWhile this historic proclamation now stands in jeopardy\, we the people can take action to protect our public lands from the ground up\, while honoring and calling attention to the broader need for top-down action. Join us in Bears Ears National Monument and take a hands-on approach to conservation.\n\n \n\nThe Work \nWe are traveling to Elk Ridge and nearby Dark Canyon Wilderness to work with the Manti-La Sal Forest Service to address the impacts of increased visitation at protected archeological sites. As the location of these sites become more widely known\, education struggles to keep apace with practical ethics. A vast array of cultural resources contained within the proclaimed designated region of Bears Ears National Monument require higher levels of management to ensure protection from negligent and uninformed travel. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\ninfrastructure improvements at a Forest Service-managed archeological site;\nloading and carrying needed materials and tools to site;\ntrail management and improvements;\nsign and informational kiosk installation\n\nOur Objective: To provide apt protections for the chosen cultural site\, ensuring alleviation of future impacts related to vehicle access\, foot traffic and negligence. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nFriday\, July 20th: Optional early arrival to camp on Friday evening.\nSaturday\, July 21st: Day 1 of Project. We will gather at 8:30am and depart for our worksite at 9:00am. We will work until 4:00pm\, then travel back to camp.\nSunday\, July 22nd: We will gather at 8:30am after breakfast. We will work until 3:30pm.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 2 – Our most common trip incorporates mid- to heavy-lifting\, work in remote landscapes at varying elevations\, an increased diversity of tool use\, and an emphasis on physical fitness and hiking competency. \n  \n\nVolunteer Responsibilities \nParticipants are responsible for their own food\, water and camping gear as well as transportation to and from the project site(s). Volunteers should plan to be away from camp all day each of the work days. A recommended pack list will be sent along with the project Welcome Letter two weeks prior to the start date. \n\nCamping & Meals \nVolunteers will camp on site at the Gooseberry Meadow on Elk Ridge. A nearby cabin provides amenities\, including: flush toilet and an indoor kitchen. \nSUWA provides (1) dinner\, (1) breakfast\, and snacks during the project. Volunteers are responsible for all additional meals during their stay. \n\nRegistration \nA completed 2018 Volunteer Agreement is required for this project. \n \nWhen we have received your form\, you will receive a confirmation e-mail within 5 working days of submission. The confirmation e-mail will indicate whether you have been placed on the “project roster” or a “waiting list.” \nThree weeks before the start of the trip\, you will receive an RSVP to confirm your participation. Individuals on the Waitlist will be contacted if spaces open due to cancellation. \nTwo weeks before the project start date\, registered and confirmed participants will receive a Welcome Letter\, with a comprehensive itinerary\, including: driving instructions\, a Project Map (for mobile devices)\, a notification about carpools and/or caravans\, and additional information in a Pre-Departure email. \nIf you have any questions at any point throughout the process\, please don’t hesitate to contact our program coordinator: volunteer@suwa.org  or  (435) 259-9151.

SUMMARY:La Sal Mountains Service Project
DESCRIPTION:The Land \nThe Manti-La Sal National Forest covers more than 1.2 million acres (4\,900 km2) and is located in the central and southeastern parts of Utah and the extreme western part of Colorado. The La Sal Mountains are located south/southeast of Moab\, Utah in Grand and San Juan Counties. The name of the range dates to Spanish times\, when the Sierra La Sal (meaning the “Salt Mountains”) were a prominent landmark on the Old Spanish Trail between Santa Fe and Los Angeles. The range is currently under review for a broad\nmanagement plan. Recent decades have seen a sharp uptick in recreational use of the La Sal Mountains throughout four seasons. While winter activities remain limited due to high incident of avalanche\, motorized and mechanized travel in the range during the other three seasons (spring\, summer\, fall) is rapidly increasing. \n\nThe Work \nWe are returning to the La Sal Mountains to complete our two-year cycle of re-routing an existing trail. The trail planned for completion is intended to facilitate travel through the range while limiting impacts on nearby protected wilderness-quality lands. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nbuilding trail and erosion control features;\nconstruction of minor creek crossing;\n\nOur Objective: To improve trail conditions such that potential impacts to fragile ecosystems are averted through strategic routing of mechanized travel. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nFriday\, August 10th: Optional early arrival to camp on Friday evening.\nSaturday\, August 11th: Day 1 of Project. We will gather at 8:30am and depart for our worksite at 9:00am. We will work until 4:00pm\, then travel back to camp.\nSunday\, August 12th: We will gather at 8:30am after breakfast. We will work until 3:30pm.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 3 – Heavy lifting\, high-elevation\, remote travel\, and extended durations away from common conveniences. Leave No Trace principles are essential during all of our trips but require the most thought and planning at Level 3. These trips may involve on-site training for technical skills and tool use. Excellent physical fitness is a must at this level. \n\nVolunteer Responsibilities \nParticipants are responsible for their own food\, water and camping gear as well as transportation to and from the project site(s). Volunteers should plan to be away from camp all day each of the work days. A recommended pack list will be sent along with the project Welcome Letter two weeks prior to the start date. SUMMARY:People's Hearing on the San Rafael Swell
DESCRIPTION:This is an urgent call to action! The future of the San Rafael Swell is at stake! \nRepresentative John Curtis and Senator Orrin Hatch are pushing ahead with their Emery County Public Land Management Act with the goal of passing legislation by the end of the year. They falsely portray the bill as a “win for all stakeholders.” In reality\, it is a loss for everyone who values the Swell for its vast wild spaces. Among its many flaws\, the bill designates less land as Wilderness than is already protected as Wilderness Study Areas or Natural Areas\, leaving 900\,000 acres of deserving BLM wild lands unprotected as wilderness. \nAnd the public has not even had a chance to weigh in! You deserve to be heard! That’s why the Utah Wilderness Coalition is holding a “People’s Hearing” in Salt Lake City. Show your support by showing up—or\, better yet\, come prepared to speak! \nHatch and Curtis may not listen to us (we’ll invite them to the hearing)\, but we can show the rest of the country—including other members of Congress who will vote on the bill—that Utahns want to protect\, not wreck\, the San Rafael Swell. The future of the Swell depends on us. We need to speak out now or the magnificent wild lands of this region could be lost forever. Please share this event widely. Bring family and friends! Bring signs! \nTO LEARN MORE about why the Emery County Public Land Management Act fails to protect the San Rafael Swell at suwa.org/dontwrecktheswell \nIn a nutshell\, the bill’s major flaws are that it: \n• Leaves 900\,000 acres of wilderness-quality lands unprotected.\n• Neglects extraordinary landscapes: San Rafael Badlands\, Muddy Creek\, and Labyrinth Canyon.\n• Makes ORV abuse worse by enshrining 800 miles of roads and routes that are currently under a court-ordered review by the BLM.\n• Conveys 10\,000 acres of public land to Goblin Valley State Park\, authorizing entrance fees and encouraging more crowding.\n• Excludes YOU from the process.

SUMMARY:Three Kiva Pueblo Service Project
DESCRIPTION:The Land \nThe culturally rich lands of southern Utah’s canyon country well exceed the boundaries of our national monuments and designated wilderness. Located between Bears Ears National Monument and Hovenweep National Monument\, Three Kiva Pueblo is a managed archeological site representative of the history of indigenous occupation of redrock country at the present-day border of Utah and Colorado.  \nThe Work \nOur crew will work with regional archaeologists to manage and restore Three Kiva Pueblo. We will be removing vegetation that has encroached on the archeological site. In addition\, we will perform masonry stabilization to ensure the integrity of the structure. Our work will protect the site from damage while clearing the visual landscape to allow for proper digital documentation of the site. 5-6 spaces available. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nvegetation management & removal\, including pruning\, lopping and clearing;\nloading and carrying needed materials and tools to site;\ndrystack masonry;\n\nOur Objective: To reduce the presence of damaging vegetation at a protected cultural site\, to repair existing damage\, and in doing so to create conditions conducive to modern mapping techniques to properly record the quality and character of the site. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nSaturday\, September 8th: Day 1 of Project. We will gather at 7:30am for workday orientation.\nSunday\, September 9th: We will gather at 8:00am after breakfast. We will work until 3:00pm.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 2 – Our most common trip incorporates mid- to heavy-lifting\, work in remote landscapes at varying elevations\, an increased diversity of tool use\, and an emphasis on physical fitness and hiking competency. \n\nCamping & Meals \nVolunteers will camp on site. Specific location will be indicated in the Welcome Letter provided to registered volunteers. \nSUWA provides (1) dinner\, (1) breakfast\, and snacks during the project. Volunteers are responsible for all additional meals during their stay.

SUMMARY:Protest BLM Oil & Gas Lease Sale
DESCRIPTION:Opponents of the Trump administration’s plan to lease more than 200\,000 acres of public lands for dirty fuel development near some of Utah’s most beloved landscapes will rally Tuesday\, September 11th at noon in front of the Bureau of Land Management’s Salt Lake City office. PLEASE JOIN US and bring your Protect Wild Utah lawn signs! The online lease sale occurs Tuesday. \nInterior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s BLM wants to allow oil and gas development within 10 miles of Canyonlands National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area\, and in the San Rafael Desert near popular rafting stretches along the Green River. This lease sale is part of the larger “energy dominance” agenda by Trump and Zinke to ramp up fossil-fuel development on public lands\, threatening wildlife\, public health and the climate. Zinke also has rewritten policies to shorten public comment periods and avoid substantive environmental reviews.

SUMMARY:Westwater Canyon WSA Service Project
DESCRIPTION:Apply Now <– Submit your application today!\nDon’t forget to complete the Volunteer Agreement. \nIf you have questions\, please don’t hesitate to contact our program coordinator:\nvolunteer@suwa.org  or  (435) 259-9151. \nRead on to learn more about our project and site! \n\nThe Land \nThe Westwater Canyon WSA spans the Westwater Canyon portion of the Colorado River with the eastern two-thirds of these protected lands located in the Dolores Triangle. Major tributary canyons on the east side of the river include Little Dolores\, Marble\, and Star canyons. A short box canyon\, Little Hole\, and a rincon (Big Hole) are the main features northwest of the river corridor. Up on the highlands\, pinyon-juniper woodlands cover over half of the WSA\, with the remaining cover consisting of sagebrush and blackbrush. The canyon itself features unique geologic features including black\, pre-Cambrian rock\, the oldest exposed rock in Utah\, which forms Westwater’s inner canyon. \nLocal land management is facing increased impacts from motorized travel beyond authorized routes in the Dolores Triangle and into the Westwater Canyon WSA. This travel results in damage to local ecologies\, as well as significant disturbance to the wilderness quality and characteristics of the WSA.\n \nThe Work \nOur crew will work to define the boundary of the Westwater Canyon WSA where it interfaces with the Dolores Triangle’s motorized travel areas. We will install fencing and reclaim the illegal route into the WSA. Our strategies will focus on naturalization and preventing further illegal travel.  8-10 spaces are available. \nWork tasks will vary by need\, and are slated to include: \n\nfence and wilderness boundary sign installation;\nvertical mulching and track/tread raking;\nmanual reclamation (with hand tools) of visually disturbed surface\n\nOur Objective: To remediate the existing impacts of illegal motorized travel and prevent subsequent travel into protected wilderness study areas. To protect the wilderness-quality of Westwater Canyon WSA. \n\nItinerary\nA comprehensive itinerary will be provided to registered volunteers. \n\nFriday\, Sept 28th: Optional Camping at Roberts Bottom or nearby.\nSaturday\, Sept 29th: Day 1. Meet at Roberts Bottom @ 9:00AM. Carpool/caravan to site.\nSunday\, Sept 30th: Day 2. Breakfast 8:00AM. Work into the afternoon.\n\n\nProject Rating  \nLevel 2 – Our most common trip incorporates mid- to heavy-lifting\, work in remote landscapes at varying elevations\, an increased diversity of tool use\, and an emphasis on physical fitness and hiking competency. \n\nCamping & Meals \nVolunteers will camp on site. Specific location will be indicated in the Welcome Letter provided to registered volunteers. \nSUWA provides (1) dinner\, (1) breakfast\, and snacks during the project. Volunteers are responsible for all additional meals – and water – during their stay. \n*Please Note: We are required to carry out all [human & other] waste for this project. Please bring wagbags or an appropriate personal waste management system. \n\nRegistration \nA Volunteer Agreement is required for this project.
