The Boundary Waters is a sprawling area of interco

The Boundary Waters is a sprawling area of interconnected lakes and boreal forests that is beloved by millions of Americans and international visitors; it is popular for canoeing, fishing, hiking, and camping. Biden-era Interior Secretary Deb Haaland protected the watershed that feeds and supports the Boundary Waters from copper mining by a Chilean-owned company by enacting a 20-year mineral withdrawal on public lands.

Earlier this week, Representative Pete Stauber (R-MN-08) introduced a “Joint Resolution” in the U.S. House of Representatives that, if passed, would undo the mineral withdrawal currently protecting the Boundary Waters, putting it in danger like never before.

Please take action TODAY to protect the Boundary Waters (link in bio). Urge your representative to vote NO on House Joint Resolution 140 and tell them you support keeping the Boundary Waters wild.

The DC office was lucky to have Thomas join our team as our fall Legislative Affairs Intern. Whether it was in congressional meetings on the Hill or just working around the office—he added so much to our work and we will miss having him around. As he works for the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology this spring and for everything that comes next, we wish him the best and hope to see him soon out on the redrock!

A Life in the Desert is the story of legendary explorer, historian, and Wilderness activist Steve Allen and his efforts to help protect public lands in Southern Utah.

Steve is the ultimate desert rat. He has tackled first descents of technical slot canyons, written beloved guidebooks, and explored over 75,000 miles of southern Utah, documenting every step of the way. Despite Utah’s world-renowned red rock landscapes, these public lands are threatened by politicians and industries that see it as a place to exploit for short-term gain. Steve’s unmatched knowledge and dedication to these remote lands shows viewers what is truly at stake.

Blending environmental advocacy, captivating history, and intimate storytelling, A Life in the Desert is a tribute to a remarkable life lived in wild places and a call to safeguard those spectacular landscapes and living history for future generations. Protect Wild Utah!

Today the Trump administration and the state of Ut

Today the Trump administration and the state of Utah announced an agreement to assert Utah’s control over 8 million acres of national forests while cutting public oversight and weakening environmental reviews. The intent of the agreement is clear: to hand publicly owned national forests over to the state of Utah to benefit corporate interests over those of the American public.

Today’s announcement marks a significant escalation in Utah officials’ long-held goal of wresting control, and ultimately ownership, of public land from the American people.

The agreement creates a “shared framework” that shifts significant decision-making power over to the state, expands logging and cements state influence in federal forest management decisions while limiting public participation.

As we near the last days of our year-end fundraisi

As we near the last days of our year-end fundraising drive, I want to shine a spotlight on a team at SUWA whose impact is felt nationwide: our Grassroots Organizing team.

This small but mighty team is the reason a regional conservation nonprofit has a presence across the entire country. Our organizers mobilize thousands of supporters and ensure that decision-makers hear—loud and clear—that people across the nation care deeply about protecting Utah’s redrock landscapes. As a result, lawmakers in every state hear from their own constituents when these federal lands are under attack.

With the support of people like you, SUWA’s grassroots organizers work tirelessly to educate activists and help generate tens of thousands of public comments on critical issues from public land sell-off attempts, to the protection and management of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monuments, to building broad congressional support for America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act—legislation backed by 60 representatives and 19 senators in 2025.

Grassroots organizing touches every aspect of SUWA’s mission. It is how we turn public concern into political pressure—and how we win protection for places that Utah’s own leaders would otherwise sacrifice for the benefit of private interests.
