This celebration is an opportunity to share our past\, our present and our future. \nThe Heritage Festival is an annual celebration. This particular event will be a special anniversary edition spanning May 9-11. SUWA will host an information booth at the festival on Saturday\, May 11. The Big Boy 4014 and 844 steam trains will be on display at Union Station. The Station will be full of exhibits celebrating the influence of the trains and rail industry. The event will also expand up Historic 25th Street for three full days of historic presentations\, live music\, performances\, vendors\, community activities and more. \nCome by and learn how we all came together to win wilderness protection for 663\,000 acres of the San Rafael Swell\, Labyrinth Canyon and Desolation Canyon earlier this year! Learn what role\, at any level\, as a volunteer or activist\, you can play in helping to Protect Wild Utah. \nVolunteers needed to help staff SUWA’s booth. Email dave@suwa.org.

This 14-minute short\, award winning documentary is an advocacy film for Utah’s last remaining wild places. SUWA advocates for protecting more than 9 million acres of federally managed public lands as Wilderness\, areas of pristine natural beauty\, unique and untrammeled ecosystems\, and unfathomable cultural significance. This film takes the viewer through the diverse landscape and draws upon diverse voices to tell the story of why these lands are worth protecting\, why oil and gas production\, off-road vehicle use\, mining\, and even politicians are risking the integrity of the landscape\, and what can be done to ensure these public lands are protected for generations to come. DESCRIPTION:Presentation & Discussion: \n\nService as Recreation: Hands-on Conservation on Utah’s Public Lands\n \nAbstract: \n \nSUWA’s volunteer service program is focused on the practical\, hands-on address of impacts and impairments to Utah’s wilderness-quality public lands. As visitation continues to outpace agency management capacity\, user impacts to natural and cultural resources increase exponentially. Yet\, it is our choice to view the problem as a solution. Increased visitation means increased (human) resources to address issues and increased opportunities to provide hands-on education from the ground-up. Through organizing and facilitating service projects\, we both support land managers in their efforts to protect wilderness-quality lands and train a new generation of public lands stewards. \n \nOutdoor recreation is a modern frontier of exploration and recreationists can become ambassadors for responsible land stewardship. By working together\, we define and instill a Service as Recreation mindset and provide the baseline awareness\, education and training to drive a cultural shift in how Utahns\, Americans and all visitors experience and honor our public lands. \n\nJoin us for a presentation and discussion on what service volunteering means in the context of broader conservation work.

Please RSVP to dave@suwa.org\, if you can help out. \nThe event highlights the neighborhood’s long and colorful history of fruit trees as well as the delicious products created from that fruit. \nThe center of activity will be at The Garten on the corner of 400 W 400 N in Salt Lake City\, including: \n\nFruit preserves competition. Submit your favorite homemade jams\, jellies\, and preserves\, with special recognition for products made with neighborhood-grown fruit. This will be a friendly competition\, with a panel of judges selected from around the city.\nLocal food trucks.\nMusic from neighborhood musicians.\nBooth spaces for local businesses and non-profit organizations.
