SUMMARY:Fivemile Pass Stewardship Project - Latino Conservation Week Event!
DESCRIPTION:APPLY NOW \nMeetup & Clean-up at Fivemile Pass! \nHappy Latino Conservation Week! You are invited to celebrate Latinidad en Conservación Tuesday July 21 to clean up a shooting area. Public lands an hour from Salt Lake City (and closer to folks living around the southern point of the Oquirrh Mountains) are littered with trash: shotgun shells\, target shrapnel\, and left-behind cans and bottles densely scatter a landscape with much target shooting and nearby raptor habitat. Please meet us for a spatially-distanced clean-up\, great music\, and the great feeling of leaving a place better than you found it! \nWhere: Shooting area just outside of “Fivemile Pass Recreation Area.” Plug these GPS coordinates into Google Maps for the exact location (40.2082337\, -112.2675537)\n \nHow to get there:\n \nFrom Salt Lake or Utah County\, head to Fivemile Pass Recreation Area. Make a pit stop at the Recreation Area if needed as toilets are not available at the clean-up site. Drive past the Recreation Area\, and turn left onto the Pony Express Road. The Road is a well graded dirt road suitable for any vehicle. Drive down the road about 5 miles until you see a sign that says “Leaving Shooting Restriction Area\,” then turn left onto the dirt parking lot at that sign. \nFrom Tooele County\, drive past Stockton and take a left at the Pony Express Trail historic marker onto highway 73. When the highway bends at the point of the Oquirrhs\, turn right onto the Pony Express Rd. Drive down the road about 5 miles until you see a sign that says “Leaving Shooting Restriction Area\,” and turn left into the dirt parking lot at that sign. \nWhat To Wear & Bring: Close-toed shoes are required. Weather will be sunny with no shade. Bring a large water bottle\, a wide brimmed hat\, and a long sleeve shirt to protect you from the sun and dust. \nSUWA will provide: gloves\, disposal masks\, a hand washing station\, hand sanitizer\, and water. \nA Volunteer Agreement is required for this project. [Paper copies will be available the morning of the project.]\n \nAPPLY NOW

SUMMARY:People's Response to Governor's Energy Summit
DESCRIPTION:In response to the Governor’s Energy Summit\, the people of Utah will hold a press conference and rally outside the Grand America Hotel to express views about energy\, climate and renewable resources being suppressed inside the official Summit. \nIn contrast to the annual Governor’s Energy Summit that primarily focuses on advancing an all-of-the-above\, business-as-usual approach to resource development\, we will elevate the voices of protectors\, youth\, frontline communities\, laborers\, gardeners\, innovators in clean energy\, public lands users and managers\, and creative change makers. Our drive comes from a love of the land\, a commitment to creating healthy\, just communities\, and a belief that another world is possible. \nIf you’re interested in volunteering at this event\, click here.

SUMMARY:Press Conference -- A Year in Review Oil & Gas Leasing in Utah
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sierra Club\, Center for Biological Diversity\, and Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance to spotlight the final oil and gas lease sale of the 2018 year. This year\, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) auctioned hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in Utah for oil and gas development. Many parcels sold sit adjacent to some of our most cherished landscapes like Bears Ears National Monument and the San Rafael Swell — just to name a few. \nOn Tuesday\, December 11th the BLM will be auctioning off over 150\,000 more acres of public lands including lands adjacent to Canyonlands National Park. In response\, we will be hosting a press conference in the Capitol Rotunda to emphasize the administration’s continued efforts to develop dirty fuels at the doorsteps of our parks\, monuments\, and priceless special places. \nWe hope that you join us in letting the Administration and Utah Delegation know that Utahns want to protect these cherished landscapes and keep dirty fuels in the ground! Be ready to chant\, and bring your signs! \nWhen: 12:00 – 1:00 pm\nWhere: Utah State Capitol Rotunda\nWho: You\, the community\, and local organizations

SUMMARY:Protest BLM Oil & Gas Lease Sale
DESCRIPTION:Opponents of the Trump administration’s plan to lease more than 200\,000 acres of public lands for dirty fuel development near some of Utah’s most beloved landscapes will rally Tuesday\, September 11th at noon in front of the Bureau of Land Management’s Salt Lake City office. PLEASE JOIN US and bring your Protect Wild Utah lawn signs! The online lease sale occurs Tuesday. \nInterior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s BLM wants to allow oil and gas development within 10 miles of Canyonlands National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area\, and in the San Rafael Desert near popular rafting stretches along the Green River. This lease sale is part of the larger “energy dominance” agenda by Trump and Zinke to ramp up fossil-fuel development on public lands\, threatening wildlife\, public health and the climate. Zinke also has rewritten policies to shorten public comment periods and avoid substantive environmental reviews.

SUMMARY:People's Hearing on the San Rafael Swell
DESCRIPTION:This is an urgent call to action! The future of the San Rafael Swell is at stake! \nRepresentative John Curtis and Senator Orrin Hatch are pushing ahead with their Emery County Public Land Management Act with the goal of passing legislation by the end of the year. They falsely portray the bill as a “win for all stakeholders.” In reality\, it is a loss for everyone who values the Swell for its vast wild spaces. Among its many flaws\, the bill designates less land as Wilderness than is already protected as Wilderness Study Areas or Natural Areas\, leaving 900\,000 acres of deserving BLM wild lands unprotected as wilderness. \nAnd the public has not even had a chance to weigh in! You deserve to be heard! That’s why the Utah Wilderness Coalition is holding a “People’s Hearing” in Salt Lake City. Show your support by showing up—or\, better yet\, come prepared to speak! \nHatch and Curtis may not listen to us (we’ll invite them to the hearing)\, but we can show the rest of the country—including other members of Congress who will vote on the bill—that Utahns want to protect\, not wreck\, the San Rafael Swell. The future of the Swell depends on us. We need to speak out now or the magnificent wild lands of this region could be lost forever. Please share this event widely. Bring family and friends! Bring signs! \nTO LEARN MORE about why the Emery County Public Land Management Act fails to protect the San Rafael Swell at suwa.org/dontwrecktheswell \nIn a nutshell\, the bill’s major flaws are that it: \n• Leaves 900\,000 acres of wilderness-quality lands unprotected.\n• Neglects extraordinary landscapes: San Rafael Badlands\, Muddy Creek\, and Labyrinth Canyon.\n• Makes ORV abuse worse by enshrining 800 miles of roads and routes that are currently under a court-ordered review by the BLM.\n• Conveys 10\,000 acres of public land to Goblin Valley State Park\, authorizing entrance fees and encouraging more crowding.\n• Excludes YOU from the process.

SUMMARY:What The Swell? @ Fisher Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Is the San Rafael Swell one of your favorite weekend get-aways?  Or maybe a geologic wonder you hope to visit someday? Then you will want to join SUWA and the Utah Sierra Club to learn about how you can help keep the San Rafael Swell. \nSen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. John Curtis are going after our public lands AGAIN at the behest of Emery County officials. Their newly proposed Emery County Public Lands Management Act\, a faux-conservation bill that omits protections for public lands and furthers the state’s land grab\, has some critical misses for preserving some of the most treasured wild ecosystems in southern Utah. \nPlease join us over some brews and bites to learn what the Swell is going on with our beloved lands. We will talk about what’s missing in the Emery County bill\, why the missing pieces are essential\, and how you can help protect these public lands that belong to everyone. \nWhen: June 20\, 2018 6:00 – 7:30 pm\nWhere: Fisher Brewing 320 W 800 S\, Salt Lake City\, UT 84101\nWho: Ages 21+
